Uttarakhand gets green shield in 135Km Ganga Stretch

The Union government declared a 135 km Ganga river stretch from Gaumukh to Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand an eco-sensitive zone, Union Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh said Tuesday. The decision had taken in the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) meeting chaired by PM Manmohan Singh Monday.

‘The NGRBA gave in principle approval under section (3) of the Environment Protection Act (EPA) of 1986 to declare the 135 km stretch from Gaumukh to Uttarkashi as eco-sensitive zone,’ said Jairam Ramesh. The NGRBA is a planning, financing, monitoring and coordinating body of the central government and the states. The objective of the NGRBA is to check pollution and conserve the Ganga through comprehensive planning and management.

“The NGRBA ratified a decision to abandon three hydel power projects – Loharinag Pala, Bhairon Ghati, and Pala Maneri – in Uttarakhand,” he added.

Uttarakhand News: Pro Dam activist, environmentalist locked horns today

A pro-dam environmentalist locked horns having divergent views over the issue of hydro power projects on the Bhagirathi river in Uttarakashi district of Uttarakhand.

“Construction of such projects would obliterate the river and affect the fragile eco-system of the area,” noted environmentalist GD Agrawal said today. He went on an indefinite fast at Haridwar seeking shut down of NTPC’s 600 MW Loharinag Pala hydel project. Agarwal had undertaken similar protests in 2008 and 2009, a move that forced the Centre and the state government to suspend three projects – 480 MW Pala Maneri and 381 MW Bhaironghati, besides Loharinag Pala project on the Bhagirathi river.

Loharinag Pala project fate will decide on July 2 meet

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests is likely to take a final decision on the execution of the Loharinag Pala hydro electric project in Uttarakhand at a meeting scheduled to be held in Delhi on July 2.

An activist residing in the area, Mallika Bhanot, says, “Development cannot be at the cost of one’s own existence. We hope that Jairam Ramesh will take the bold decision needed for saving the Ganga which is the lifeline of our nation”.Government had already decided to scrap the Bhaironghati phase one, two and Pala Maneri hydro electric projects.

The committee comprising scientists from IIT in its report had concluded that “leaving the project incomplete may aggravate the risks of landslides in certain stretches and may increase the likely damage to the surroundings. But the risks can be mitigated through suitable measures”.
