Bhagirathi dam can be shut down

A technical committee set up by the environment and forests ministry has concluded that 600 MW Loharinag Pala dam on the Bhagirathi river can be shut down.

The committee was set up after a meeting chaired by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee along with power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and environment minister Jairam Ramesh was held in March to review the dams on the Bhagirathi.

Ministers agreed that 381 MW Bhaironghati and 480 MW Pala Maneri hydroelectric projects will not be go ahead but advocated for Loharinag Pala ongoing work that shuting down to it will cause loss to exchequer as well as potential damage to the region if left incomplete like risk of landslides and floods.

U’khand may get free power if hydel projects are scrapped – Sify Finance

With a group of ministers all set to meet on June 7 to decide the fate of NTPC’s 600 Mw Loharinag Pala hydel power project, the Centre has assured the Uttarakhand government that it would consider its demand for free power in case the three hydel projects are scrapped.
