Protesters want suspension of public hearing on Devsari project, Chamoli, Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand State Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board has planned to organise the second public hearing on environmental issues regarding the construction of the Devsari hydro electricity project on the Pindar river in Chamoli District on July 22.

The Matu People’s Organisation (MPO) and Bhu Visthapit Sangharsh Samiti (BVSS) have written a letter to the Secretary of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, Vijay Sharma, requesting him to suspend the public hearing.

The first environmental public hearing on the Devsari project slated to be held on October 13, last year was cancelled due to public opposition.

“Solve BBMB Projects issue” Himachal CM to Union Minister for Power

Chief Minister, Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal has urged the Union Minister for Power, Shri Sushil Kumar Shinde to take final decision about the legitimate share of Himachal Pradesh in Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) Hydro Electric Projects commissioned in Himachal Pradesh.

State had already suffered a lot financial loss due to non settlement of this long pending issue. CM said that State was getting only 15 MW power annually from Beas to Satluj Link Project (BSLP). He said that State was entitled for 7.19 percent of the power being generated in these Hydro Electric Power Projects as its legitimate share based upon the proportion of population transferred from Punjab to Himachal Pradesh as per the Punjab Reorganization Act 1966 duly passed by the Parliament of India which had legal validity. He said that the arrears of the claim of Himachal Pradesh come to Rs. 2200 crore which should also be paid to the State.

Power sector growth required for devlopment in Uttarakhand

Power demand is growing 15% per year and Center deciding to stop two major hydel project in Bhagirathi valley, due to this government find is tough to improve power scenario.

Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJNVL) had been able to commission only one big hydel project – 304 Mw Maneribhali-II that too with the help of irrigation department and some 20Mw small hydel projects. And due to environmental and other issue it is possible that in 4-5 year state will not see any big government power project.

Besides, Power Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh said the state will be able to commission 8 hydel projects with a capacity of 100 Mw in the next 2-3 years. These are the projects being aided by Asian Development Bank (ADB) and NABARD and constructed by UJVNL.
